How I find the color soul of a brand before I design anything

(german version down below) Color is the most powerful, most underestimated tool in branding. Before most designers open a color wheel, I do something different. I have a conversation. Not about color. About feeling.

WHY COLOR IS NEVER REALLY ABOUT COLOR

Before I choose a single hex code, I ask questions like: If your brand were a place, where would it be? What time of day does your brand feel like? What does your ideal client feel when they find you? What would your brand never be caught dead wearing? These questions sound strange. But the answers reveal everything.

A REAL EXAMPLE

I worked with a wellness coach who described her brand as "a warm kitchen at dusk, the smell of something homemade, a conversation that feels safe." From that description, I found deep terracotta, warm cream, and a forest green that felt like the shadow of a herb garden.

She hadn't mentioned a single color. But she'd told me exactly what her palette needed to feel like.

THE TECHNICAL PART COMES SECOND

Once I have the emotional direction, I go into the technical work: contrast ratios, accessibility, primary vs. accent distribution. The soul guides the system. Color is the first thing people feel about your brand — before they read a word.

Was würde deine Marke niemals tragen?
