Logo vs. brand identity: What's the actual difference?

This is the question I get asked most often. The short answer: your logo is part of your brand identity, but your brand identity is so much more than your logo.

WHAT A LOGO IS

A logo is a mark — the symbol or wordmark that represents your business. It's important, but it's a single element. Think of it like your signature. Distinctive, recognisable, yours. But your signature alone doesn't tell someone who you are or why they should choose you.

WHAT A BRAND IDENTITY IS

A brand identity is the complete visual language of your business: your logo (primary, secondary, icon versions), your color palette and usage rules, your typography, graphic elements, imagery style, and brand guidelines. Together, these create a cohesive visual world. Whether someone finds you on Instagram, your website, or a printed flyer — they should instantly recognise you.

WHY IT MATTERS

Many businesses invest in a logo and stop there. Then they wonder why their brand feels inconsistent. Inconsistency erodes trust. Every time someone encounters a different version of your brand, they have to re-evaluate who you are.

A logo is a door handle. A brand identity is the entire building.

Inkonsistenz erodiert Vertrauen.

Ein Logo ist ein Türgriff. Eine Markenidentität ist das gesamte Gebäude.
